Re: TB -- Lowe's, Walmart & Home Depot

I ignore the iris, but I assess stock of daffodils and tulips the week before
Thanksgiving, and then go back the week of Thanksgiving and buy the
drastically reduced bulbs that interest me. Last year I for a wonderful red
tulip at Walmart at $1.00 for the bag of 30, so bought ten bags. I got a
similar quantity of daffodils, and there were two bags of anemone's which I
had never grown before and they performed beautifully interplanted among my
iris. Our climate is mild enough there is no problem planting bulbs the first
week in December.

Always looking for something to interplant among my iris for some summer
interest, I bought a packet of dahlia seed and got about 20 plants last year
which grew to about 30" and bloomed all summer with a variety of flower forms
from simple to complex, in shades of beige, yellow, lavender, rose and bright
red. I saved seed and they came true this year and I have a magnificent front
border. I lifted my tubers last year, and go some early bloom from them, but
this year's seedlings were slower to flower but seem to be blooming longer
and show no sign of slowing down.

Bumble bees love them and sometimes there are three bees entranced on one
flower who are not disturbed at all when I go about deadheading spent flowers
on the same plant.

For me I am saving seed only from the red tones recognizing that I will get a
mixture next year. I plan to segregate the seed from the yellows which I do
not want, but I am sure I will have plenty of both.

If there is anyone who wants seed, please send me a SASE and specify "from
yellow" or "from red tones."
