I think we must do our own research on the causes of rot in our gardens.
Different climates seem to give different experiences with rot, though
obviously, we all have it. I dug and replanted the 75 X 15 bed that I
posted a picture of earlier this year. I found only two cases of rot in
it. The guest bed, which is adjacent to it, was full of rot. That
guest bed got the most of my attention this year. It had a lot of
compost and silt rototilled into it. It got fertilized, weeded and
watered faithfully once a week. The ground there is mellow. My regular
bed, two years old, got only the time and attention that was left over.
The ground is usually hard as cement.
Today I started digging and lining out some of my two year selected
seedlings. The seedling bed is one that got even more badly neglected.
The rhizomes from the different crosses ranged from huge potato like
things to others about the size of a nickel, but I see no rot. We are
coming to the end (I hope) of the hottest summer ever, five months above
100 degrees, and much of that around 110 degrees. I'm really amazed
that the irises are doing as well as they are. Only the guest bed shows
rot and pineappling. Is the moral here, neglect them?"
