Re: Re: CULT: auxin & cytokinin?

Hi Linda,

I use Keikigrow Plus for propagating orchids, (specifically for cloning Phalaenopsis) and those African violets that can't be cloned from leaf cuttings, i.e. chimeras. It can be purchased directly from Plant Hormones Canada using this form:

http://www.orchidmall.com/hormones/keikiord.htm

It's rather pricey but a little bit last for years if stored tightly covered in the refrigerator.

I'm considering trying this cytokinin on iris rhizomes to induce increases (not roots) on otherwise useless, bloomed out rhizomes that would be discarded anyway. Plant Hormones Canada also carries an auxin called Keikiroot, if roots are what you need. Another option would be to dust the bottom of the rhizomes with a rotting powder such as Rootone, as Bill mentioned. The cytokinin treated rhizomes would not need to be "wounded" to any extent if the possibility of rot is an issue. If my experience with orchids and African violets is any indicator, the iris rhizome tissue would only have to be barely scratched with the Keikigrow covered applicator to induce cell division and subsequesnt increases......if it would even work at all!

Janet in Denmark WI.......head thrown back, eyes rolling, twitching all over.....I feel an experiment coming on ;-)

Janet, where do you get the cytokinin you use, which is it, and if you
were going to try to induce adventitious buds (root buds for me, not
shoot buds) on irises, which would you use & how much? Is wounding the
only way to get it into the iris tissue? As if I don't already have
enough rot inviting insults to rhizomes here.....
