So true!  You really gotta watch those pumped up varieties from the West for iris goiter (see 
the Mallorn Archives).  The 'neck' acts as a reservoir in this climate, and I shudder when I open 
a box and find irises with 'fat' necks.  The steam cooks in the neck and starts rot.  Dry out the 
rhizomes upwards to a month before potting or planting.  

Say what you will about the peanut rhizomes from the East, but they don't ordinarily rot the 
first year.  You may have to wait two to three years for bloom though.
