I am a statistician resident at Stellenbosch near Cape Town in South
Africa.
There is a famous set of data on irises that is acredited to Edgar
Anderson and made famous by Sir R.A. Fisher (1936) one of the greatest
statisticians of all time. He developed the statistical theory of
discriminant analysis illustrated on that data set. There are 50
observations on each of three species of iris. The idea is to use
measurements on petal width and length and sepal width and length of
these three known species to establish a model by which an unknown
specimen can be identified on the basis of the four mentioned
measurements alone, taking into account the variability in these
measures as reflected in the 150 known data points. The data are today
used by data analysts to illustrate different methods of classification.
One data source is T.W. Anderson's famous book "An introduction to
multivariate statistical analysis", (2nd edition), John Wiley, NY, Table
3.4, page 98.
I am unfamiliar with iris species but would like to find out what the
flower colours of the three species under discussion are. They are: Iris
setosa, I. versicolor and I. virginica.
I would like to use this information in a training course on computer
graphics. Your help would be highly appreciated and would make my
training somewhat more interesting. If someone can let me have images of
these three species in flower, that would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance.
