I have heard more  than one person doesn't recommend fertilizing
in the fall. Something about the cycles of the plant and getting
mixed and trying to grow during warm days in the fall. (With the
conflicting info about fertilizer, it is a wonder we all still
have iris bloom :-)

So, I do not fertilize any plants in the fall which starts at
the end of August here. Frost can come at any time. When I
amended two new beds this year, I did not add fertilizer.. I did
add compost,etc.
