Call your local Agi extension office for the local first freeze date. Most

A general gardening rule, without regard to zone, is to not fertilize within
6 weeks of your normal first freeze date. Around here we often get a season
extension of 2-6 weeks longer than the normal, but it's not dependable. I've
occasionally seen the first hard freeze followed by another 6 weeks or so of
mild weather. (And iris blooms) I've rarely seen the first hard freeze earlier
than the established norm.
A personal note. I never use slow release fertilizers in the fall. That is
commercial fertilizers. Compost is a slow release fertilizer and should be
used with care in the fall.
