That sounds rational. But this remains a mystery to me only
because the person who first presented it to a group (during AIS
Judge's training at a national convention) lives in Maryland not
up North.
Gardeners usually do what works in their gardens after trial and
error. The more experience in the garden locale, the better
things turn out - sometimes. :-)
Ellen (who takes most gardening advice with a heavy dose of
skepticism after seeing the beardless guest iris 'grave markers'
at the Dallas and Oklahoma AIS conventions. The guest iris beds
were planted with a fertilizer that was predominately alkaline
and the fertilizer was a local product. At least that is what we
were told. I am assuming that this product was used for the
three years the guests were planted - both fall and spring.)
