I answered Linda's mail direct - guess I should have, in this case, sent it
thru the iris talk system, but so many times an answer is really for that one
person! Anyhow, I was actually trying to phone Joan at the time I was
reading email -- I talk to her frequently, and her phone number is under her
address in the catalog and I know she does phone people, altho she rarely reads or
uses email, she's too busy in the garden She does her own work mostly and
doesn't have a staff like the Big Names. I did not reach her then, and supposed
she's trying to cope with the coming weather since her husband was out of
town, and the weather is pretty scary right now. Joan is very meticulous with
her iris orders, but this year has been a disaster as it has for so many
gardeners - for a while I was wondering if the rain would stop long enough to try
to plant, and the weeds grow expansively! And in her case, the rains were
devastating for her garden and she lost many irises, even rows of the same thing!
She is still shipping - I finally got her on the phone, and she knew about
Linda's order for the one rhizome, which was a new intro which was one of
those (or course) that had suffered in the weather. She was waiting until
shipments were enough over to see how much she had left (orders are filled in order,
I guess -- no pun intended) -- but this one is down to 2 rz, so she said she
was planning on sending Linda back her check when she can get to a mailbox
without swimming( !) and hope for better luck and weather for the garden next
year. In the past I know (because I have helped her) she has sent out
beautiful rz and she has bemoaned what she had available this year - and in
Feb.(when she did a count) she had high hopes for a good year -- but this spring was
unbelievable! -- even farmers were complaining they couldn't plant! Hope
this is an exoneration for all the small gardeners. Rosalie nr Baltimore,USA
