Potting soil with fertilizer already in it is available. It usually costs a little
more, but is satisfactory if things are going to be potted for six months. I put
in soil up to the rim of the pot, water it down, and let the soil sink. Then I add
more soil. The rhizome sits on the top of the potting soil. I water from the
bottom through the drainage holes by putting the pots in shallow trays of
water. If a plant should come down with pale or yellow leaves, I sprinkle some
Miracle Grow on the top and water it in. I have never put granular fertilizer on
the top of pots containing irises.
