I recently received a form from the 2004 Convention folks reporting on
performance of the seedlings I sent. The form has columns for stalks,
increase, and health. The columns for stalks and increase were filled
out, but not the one for health.
Linda, first of all it is great that the 2004 Convention committee is so
prompt in letting you (hybridizers) know the status of the plants you sent. In
the past I know it has been a "sore point" from hybridizers who sent plants and
never heard a word as to how they were doing.
I believe the purpose of the "health" column is just to keep track of the
ones with health problems. We have received from the 2005 Convention Guest Iris
Chairman about 300 guest plants and about 12 are in the "sick bay" as (in my
words) puny. One is definitely a goner, two are of aphylla background so are
probably just dormant, two are "probably not going to make it" and the others
are responding to Intensive Care in pots. The hybridizers will be given an
opportunity next year to replace any lost due to health issues.
We of the 2005 Convention Committee were very pleased to see many plants from
new hybridizers and continue to feel that the National and Regional
Conventions give great opportunities to expose new plants and hybridizers to the
iris-loving public. Distribution has always been a problem for small hybridizers.
The Guest Iris Chair has a big job acknowledging, distributing and tracking a
thousand or more varities for a Convention and we applaud Betty Coyle and her
group for reporting back the progress to you!
BTW, we normally plant about 100 new varities each year and our average
"bloom" is about 50% on first year plants. Of course, the ones that wait until the
second year are the ones I MOST wanted to see!
