I, for one, believe printed and online resources complement each other
and will most likely continue to do so for some time to come. To use the
online vs. printed AIS Check Lists as examples, I find that having access
to both is a tremendous time saver for me. I live in a very rural area
with slow modem access. If I want to check something in a registration
entry and know the year of registration, it's considerably quicker for me
to grab the CL and look it up. If I don't know the year of registration,
the online db is the quicker way to go.
If my ISP goes down, printed material is all I have available. If I
don't have access to my computer for any reason, printed material is all
there is. Without a laptop and wireless connection (neither of which I
have), printed material is the only portable option. When my neck hurts
too badly to sit at this computer one more minute, I can still read a
book. If I didn't own a computer at all, online resources would have no
value to me whatsoever.
Fact is, I spend the vast majority of my reading/researching time online,
but that doesn't mean I don't still appreciate, covet, and rely on
printed material. I've never had a book crash on me yet.
