Re: REF: Online verses Print

Mr. Pries, I would like to offer a few comments on your post. I think a
5 volume encyclopedia is a monumental undertaking for an individual not
trying to make a profit! It must be a labor of love. As such, have you
approached AIS about donating your work and having it available as a
subsidized work for members? It might even be made available both as
printed material and on CD? It might serve both interests well that way.
I for one appreciate the electronic media so much because I live in a
rural area, we do not have a library in our small town and even the next
town where I have an out of district card does not have iris printed
material. My book cases are all full. I think the electronic exposure is
far wider spread than printed material. I firmly believe that the iris
society in general and especially commercial gardens benefit from the
electronic discussions, on line information and broad group of people the
data reaches. Personally, I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars
more on iris in the past 5-6 years while on this list than in the
previous 20-25 via local garden groups and printed material. Again,
sometimes distance is a factor. I can spend all day in the garden versus
fighting maps, traffic and parking then still have to come home and do
garden work! I appreciate both formats very much but if I had to choose,
it would be the electronic format easily. Not to say that I would not
print out salient information as I want. Electronic is also so much more
current and changing all the time. I think this informal discussion group
of world wide iris friends should verify the attraction of on line
information and sharing.

For local printed projects (not iris related) we have either done things
in installments or presold a minimum number of copies. Just out of
curiosity, are you typing your manuscript or doing it on the computer?

Give me online!

Good Luck
