I am sorry--I haven't quite figured out yet how to reply specifically to an established thread, but this is intended as a follow up to Michael's reference to Boric Acid. I have always heard that boric acid would kill roaches--so it also works for crickets, too?It works best on nesting insects such as ants. It works for roaches, crickets etc because they tend to herd together and it gets spread to the others as well as eggs. It is veeerrryy slow though and takes 3 - 4 weeks to kill all of the ants, eggs etc. Sevin is very safe ecologically but there are times when you should consider something more potent such as Diazenon or Malathion, both of which we have safely used on iris especially the spuria which are strong attractants for ants and wasps.

Antibacterial soap in water works well on wasps because they carry it back to the nest to feed their eggs. It is also used for other reasons on iris. I don't know if a coating on your iris would penetrate enough to deter your crickets before its all washed away but its cheap and safe and maybe worth a try.
I do believe I saw a recipe for honey coated crickets...
