Re: HYB: Blyth, Wabash, etc

You are right about not noting WABASH or SHAH JEHAN in Blyth backgrounds, but
these are not the only possible sources of Umbrata patterns by a far cry.
Many older irises have the fall overlay. Blyth would not have reached as far
back in history as these two for his source materials.

I have not grown WINE AND ROSES, but let me be clear--the Umbrata may or may
not have a band around the edge. Many of the early ones--example is
BRUNO--are solid clear to the edge. The width of the band also varies
greatly.

The seedling I registered as DESCANT (but destroyed eventually, so I may reuse
the name) was also a solid to the edge. The pattern is not defined by
edge--it is defined by where in the iris tissue it is formed, and by the
over-lay characteristic. I am pretty sure WINE AND ROSES is one of these.

Some of the butterfly-wing-veins patterns are a variation on the Umbrata, I
think. They occur in the same family lines, and many intermediate forms
occur. I have in mind a whole lot of the ROMANTIC EVENING grandchildren that
are wing-veined part way down the fall, then become solid below. Most of
these get discarded, as they have a very messy appearance in most cases--but
not all.
