Re: RE: OT Iris on the Federal list

Hi Char,

I haven't looked at the references others have given, but I know I. lacustris
up close and personal. Several years ago we drove through the upper part of
lower Michigan and stopped at a little roadside park near Alpena. Growing in
the parking area and under picnic table was I. lacustris. We couldn't believe
that the state would do that knowing the iris was endangered. Many years
earlier, before it was declared endangered, we had found it growing along the
eastern shore of Lake Michigan and brought home a piece. It was a lavender form
and looked like a smaller version of I. cristata. It grew well for several
years and then disappeared. We also purchased a rare white form from a nursery
in Massachusetts, but that one didn't survive long at all. Apparently I.
lacustris must also grow in parts of Wisconsin near Lake Michigan.
