Neil, like I said in my previous post, you didn't have me trained last
spring to look at the backs of falls, so I'm still stuck using my
original definition of umbrata pattern (i.e., 'shadowed' falls, with a
light rim that matches the standards). Think of it as a phenotype
rather than genetic.
I tried to find photos online of WINE AND ROSES with no luck. Found a
few that don't match the checklist description (some not even close!),
but nothing that does match.
If anybody has a photo they would post to iris-photos, I'd love to see
it. Especially if you have a view that shows the back side of one of
the falls.
From the checklist:
WINE AND ROSES (D. Hall, R '63). 59-26. TB, 35", M, V3. "S
rose-pink; F violet-purple edged rose-pink. From two sdlgs. of same
coloring. HM '64, JC '64, '65, AM '66. Cooley '63."
So that does qualify as "classic" umbrata in appearance at least.
A search of the online database for <wine and roses> turned up two Shoop
irises that I recognized from a lot of relatively older Blyth pedigrees.
SNOW PEACH (G. Shoop, R. 1971). Sdlg. 66-20-2. TB, 36" (91 cm),
EM. S. white; F. peach-pink; tangerine-red beard. Latin Lover X 64-16:
(Wine and Roses x (Whole Cloth x pink amoena sdlg.)). Shoop 1971.
LATIN LOVER (G. Shoop, R. `69). 64-16. TB, 36", M,, RV3PF. S
light lavender-pink; F grape wine with light lavender-pink rim;
tangerine beard; ruffled. (Inv. pink amoena sdlgs. x Whole Cloth) X Wine
and Roses HC `68. Shoop `69.
Both of these irises combine the umbrata genes (assuming WINE AND ROSES
really is umbrata) with I(s) genes.
SNOW PEACH is in the pedigrees of these Blyth irises:
CAMEO WINE (1982).
HELLO LOVE (1978).
LISA ANN (1977).
PEKING DANCER (1985).
RAIN CRYSTAL (1981).
WISH (1981)
And LATIN LOVER is in pedigrees of these Blyth irises:
CHAMPAGNE MOON (1977).
CHIMBOLAM (1978),
COFFEE CAPRI (1975).
LOVE THE SUN (1983).
MAKADOLA (1983).
TAJ REGIS (1988).
VILLAGE GOSSIP (1995)
Of those, CHIMBOLAM and LISA ANN are in the pedigrees of nearly all the
Blyth pedigrees I've been interested in. CAMEO WINE is in a few too.
LISA ANN is in the pedigrees of CHAMPAGNE SNOW , CHINESE TREASURE, LOVE
CHANT, and TOMORROW'S CHILD, among others.
CHIMBOLAM is in pedigrees of AFFAIRE, AZTEC BURST, CRAZY FOR YOU,
IMPRIMIS, among others.
CAMEO WINE is in pedigrees of ENGLISH CHARM, MAGHAREE, PAGAN DANCE,
among others
WINE AND ROSES is in 64 entries in the online database.
Perhaps combining the easy fertility and germination of pinks with
umbrata/recessive amoena and dominant amoena in WINE AND ROSES mixed
those genes around enough in LATIN LOVER and SNOW PEACH to improve
fertility?
Ok, so that's way beyond any real information available - just playing.
But at least it does look like the modern 'umbrata' looking irises from
Blyth breeding have both 'umbrata' and I(s).
