Re: HIST: HYB: REF: Wine and Roses, Blyth

Answering my own question after a bit more rummaging in the World of
Iris (book).

It says some of Hall's early crosses used DAUNTLESS. DAUNTLESS and
parent CARDINAL have pink standards and burgundy falls, which is more or
less the color pattern of WINE AND ROSES, but I can't tell from photos
of DAUNTLESS and CARDINAL whether or not it's a layered dark color on
the falls. Neither has conspicuous rims that match the standards, so
aren't what I consider classic umbrata appearance.

However DOMINION (grandparent of DAUNTLESS) does have light rims on
falls the color of standards.

So, possibly umbrata genes were present in both DAUNTLESS and PRAIRIE
SUNSET?

Neil, it sounds like you are going to try to make your environment
compatible with the irises you want to grow instead of the route I'm
taking, which is finding irises compatible with my environment <g>

I've had MASTERY for a few years - finally bloomed this best of all
bloom years, but is not very healthy here. I did get some good pollen
from it, one pod on a tough kid.

As for DECADENCE - I will probably be pelted with rotten fruit for
saying this, but I don't really like the form all that much. Too stiff,
upturned edges of falls, too over the top with lacy fancyness. In other
words, a bit <too> decadent <g>

Plus what I <really> want is a blue neglecta/umbrata - either pallida
blue standards, velvet blue black falls, pallida blue rims or with
YAQUINA blue falls, pallida blue rims & standards. Or pink and
burgundy. But not yellow and purple or brown.
