Neil, I'm curious as to why you don't consider DAUNTLESS as a possible
source of umbrata in Hall breeding? Rather DAUNTLESS combined with
something else. It's mentioned in The World of Iris as being one of the
cultivars he used in early crosses.
Did you exclude it because you know the darker fall color isn't layered
on the falls (i.e., back of falls lighter colored). While it doesn't
have light rims to match the standards (classic umbrata appearance),
from what you've been saying, that doesn't mean it isn't umbrata
genetics (dark overlay on falls).
Maybe the rims take something else to show up. Something that used to
make them hard to germinate <g>
I'm starting to have greater appreciation for one of my colorful
seedlings from CELEBRATION SONG X ARMAGEDDON....The two from that cross
that have bloomed so far are definitely umbrata appearance, I think C
SONG also has the overlay (will double check next spring), but not the
rim. Some of the IMMORTALITY X C SONG kids definitely had different
colors on front and back of falls, but I can't remember which color was
on which side - yellow and white.
I said previously;
<DAUNTLESS and parent CARDINAL have pink standards and burgundy falls,
which is more or less the color pattern of WINE AND ROSES, but I can't
tell from photos of DAUNTLESS and CARDINAL whether or not it's a layered
dark color on the falls. Neither has conspicuous rims that match the
standards, so aren't what I consider classic umbrata appearance.>
