I haven't given much thought to DAUNTLESS as it does not appear in any
pedigrees I know of for the predominant tangerine bearded seedlings from which
later generations descended. ( Now, if I get a note on the side from Mike
Lowe pointing out just such a one, it will add considerably to my edification.
)
Considering how small a garden plot Hall is said to have worked with, he would
have had to cull parents and seedlings with a firm hand. There wasn't any
room for slack or side issues.
It is possible there may have been a trail of seedlings tracing back to
DAUNTLESS--that is as good a guess as any for the remote source of the
Umbrata--that survived in parallel with the primary line that includes
FANTASY, CHERIE, MAY HALL and the like. I just don't in my imagination see
him giving room to such. Still, the Umbrata has to come from somewhere!
