From what you and Rita say, an iris that falls off the list and that has
already won whatever awards it will win has no way to get back on the
list, and perhaps one that's slow in becoming popular will never make it
at all, no matter how popular it becomes. There were in the past iris
that fell off the list and then came back on, I believe, and there are
certainly some that go down one year and up the next (same principle).
It would make more sense to leave irises on the ballot for a few years
after they fall off, and maybe to include the top 150 from the previous
year on the ballot. Along with the top 10 write-ins, since write-ins
show special interest. And some wild cards selected for their regional
popularity (based on regional polls). And so on. Of course, I'm the
kind of person who, if I were doing it, would report every iris receiving
votes, and would encourage write-ins. I'm over-thorough that way, and I
like to root for the underdog. If unknown Joe Schmoe's iris that has
only been distributed among friends gets 12 votes and shows up at number
345, that's a very useful bit of information to those looking for lesser
known iris.

It seems to me there was a thread on this a while back, maybe a year or two ago.
It seems that the write-ins (they did try it again to see) were statistically not
significant, and none garnered enough votes to make the list. I also seem to
recall that the list that is voted from is made up of the previous years' 100,
plus everything that is on the current years awards ballot, or some such formula.

Maybe this is a politically incorrect statement, but why can't we write any
in? Seems like I remember that capability some time ago. I have gobs of
irises that are not top 100, some of which you mention, that I would love
to vote for, as they are pretty AND perform. How does a relatively new
iris, one which indeed does seem to walk on water, make the voting
list? There are obviously new varieties on the 100 list every year. Maybe
I shouldn't ask, but who gets them on the ballot to be voted upon?

We're allowed to vote for 25. I usually mark under 20 when I go through the
list. I've been raising modern irises for 20 years. Had about 600 in
Alvaton and have since grown another 300-500. Quit counting.
I've grown most of the ones on the list. Many or most have bloomed. But I
don't vote for them unless they 'perform' in my garden. There are many
beautiful irises that bloom in my garden every year, but most don't
perform.
Many of my irises fit the 'pretty face' category. Wish I could vote for
them but I just can't! As an example, I have XYZ. (hope there's not an
iris
with that name?!) XYZ is a beautiful iris and it blooms each and every
spring.
It usually has 1 perfect stalk. Show bench quality but good in the
garden.
Flawless. But I would NEVER vote for it on the symposium.
I've had XYZ for 5 or 6 years. And each spring I get the 1 bloom stalk.
Each summer it increases just enough to stay alive. After all this time
I have
less than 1 fan per year. AND it still only blooms 1 stalk per year. (XYZ
is NOT it's real name . . .) I will not vote for it.
Then there is ZYX (think they're related) . This one has three or four
stalks each year, but they never grow more than a couple of inches out of
the
fans.
So long as there ARE irises that perform to required standards in my garden,
I can't vote for those that do not. Some that perform reliably? Skating
Party, Song of Norway, Strictly Ballroom, & Kevin's Theme. There are
others.
Many of my good irises are no longer on the ballot. Once upon a time we
could write those in, but no more.
