Adam,
You are in USDA Zone 4 (and a half :-) - still very cold and sub-zero winters. Griff, Betty, Linda
and Paul are in VA, KY, TN and NC. I am assuming that they plant their seed pots in the 'ground'
as opposed to me who plants iris (and other seeds) indoors in February. Before that I dry them
thoroughly and put them in paper envelopes and then freeze them (yep) for about 2 wks. and then
refrigerate them until almost read to plant. When I plant them in pots and some in containers with
a cover (which keeps them moist (mini-greenhouse). I add no more water.
Usually I have good germination when I divide and cull the little plants. Then I put them in pots or
directly in the ground depending on growth time and calendar time. I never plant in the ground
until the latter part of May. Our ground can be frozen until June 1st and sometimes later.
There is a signifcant difference between Zone 3 and Zone 4. I am dealing with such a short
period of frost-free soil that all of this may not apply to your seed planting. Zone 4 seems
like heaven to me when I drive 35 miles south each spring and see blooming bulbs and
I might have snow still on the garden. :-)
