Betty -- Year before last, as I reported to the list last summer, my
overall germination rate was 68%, and about 28 sprouts also came up in
several dozen loaf pans left over ungerminated from previous years. This
spring, my overall germination rate was 43%, with just 3 sprouts from
leftovers, though the seeds had received the same treatment as the previous
year. As I compared notes with other hybridizers within a 2-hour drive,
elevation ranging from the coast to the mountains, I found that their
germination rate was even worse, with one, in the mountains, reporting only
12%. The only difference that I can recall between the two years is that in
the first year, we had hard freezes and some good snows; last year we had
prolonged hard freezes and virtually no snow. Did that make the difference?
I'm always reminded of the ancient saying: Man proposes; God disposes. --
