Your differences from year to year may also be related to the parents used in the crosses.  Some parents that I have used have tended to produce seeds that germinate very easily and more uniformly after vernalization.  
There are others that give lots of seeds but poor germination.  So likely, one year that you get a new variety to bloom for you you would tend to make all the crosses you can with and might end up with a lot of seed from it.  Correspondingly, you might also plant these at the same time it would produce more seedlings that year if it has a tendency to produce easily germanating seeds.

According to reports I read, my rate of seed sprouting is about average.   However, 
there have been years I've had terrific high rates and I'd like to  duplicate 
that rate!  Once again I recommend Paul Black's Internet piece on  sprouting
