Re: CULT: Pot culture

Char - 4 gallon size because, after some deciphering of Betty's posts
<g>, that seems to be the size that works for her. 5 gallon might be
better, but that's one more gallon of mix per pot.

The 4 gallon ones that I salvaged from the dump last spring seemed to
work well for the ones I experimented with this spring.

George - another possible con is that pots will heat up and cool off
faster than planting in the ground. In areas without good snow cover,
that might be an added stressor. But could be overcome by burying pots
in mulch. Earlier (more rapid) warming in my climate (and other mid
continental areas, where such things are more severe than where you are)
could also set them up for more severe late winter/early spring freeze
damage.

Having them in pots for the latter will actually be an advantage for me,
because it will make it easier to provide protection, either by
covering, or if it's a <really> bad one, bringing them indoors.

Betty can fill you in on breeding potential of California rebloomers.

Rebloom is secondary for me, so that's the main thing I <am> using pots
for, the fussy oncers. Crossing them with the very healthiest of the
rebloomers here. Which, I've already learned, often isn't enough to
produce many kids that will live here :-( At least it simplifies
seedling selection <g>

<Is it worthwhile use of pots to keep pretty oncers who are good
parents, or should I only collect rebloomers who have the genetic
potential, even if it is in sunny California? George>
