I'm going to go weed, but will add that most "regular" gardeners (not
collectors or pollen daubers) in this area are growing only a few irises
- INDIAN CHIEF, SHANNOPIN, WABASH, plus a few others I haven't
identified. These are good irises in our climate. They were bred in
the 1940s or earlier.
Our local club buys several hundred dollars worth of Club Plants from
Superstition every year or so to try to add a few newer strong award
winners to our sales. We don't sell them to the public without growing
them first ourselves because <most> of them die with normal garden care
here and our customers wouldn't come back. I usually don't take any
from the club to grow because even if they don't die, I rarely get any
increase to take back for our sales. I took a couple this year to try
in pots of sterile medium to see if they will last a little longer that
way.
Does anybody on the west coast or other dry summer regions believe it?
I get the impression not. Betty and I see the "dead elephant" every
year, both in our and other local gardens, plus I hear about it from
others in our region.
