I've been trying to follow along in the many stages of this discussion. It's clear that different people have different interests in what can be learned from tests in gardens. Here's my two bits, worth about that.
It seems to me that any actual garden results someone wants to take the trouble to share can be useful to some others, if interpreted properly. If the AIS or regions or clubs can facilitate the gathering of info, that's all the better. But it appears from this discussion that it's likely to remain the case that different gardeners will gather different kinds of info, consistent with their interests and conditions. Some flexibility in approach will get the most out of that. If there's a form available, some gardeners using it might commit to fill out only parts of it. Like what lived and what bloomed. Others might add info not asked for on the form, such as how many hours of sun fell on the iris at midsummer, how many days each bloom lasted when sunny, how many when cloudy, etc. All of it's potentially useful and should be welcomed.
For statistically secure results more info might be needed, but if I were considering an operation that had been performed in my hospital numerous times but for which I only had information about four times, resulting in two deaths and two so-so outcomes, I'd want to know that. It's not statistically significant in some ways, but what has happened in Jeff Walters' garden over the years, which I've been able to read about in the archives, is significant information to me nonetheless because of the similarity of conditions. Even so, I only use the info as one of many kinds of info to consider. If I can choose between too similar iris, one of which has flourished for Jeff (or Charlotte or others in my area), while the other has done poorly for him, I'll weigh that in my choice, along with price, reports form further locations, and so on. It can all be useful if properly considered.
Vivent les differences!
Kent
