Linda and all,
This is so true! For example: Last year I received two new intro's from a
hybridizer and planted them both in the same garden. One died during the
summer, the other lived!
Also, a couple varieties that THRIVED during the past 2 years, after being
reset, didn't even bloom this past spring.
Several varieties this year had pinappling which had never had pinappling
before in my garden, and therefore the bloom was not typical.
One variety that has always done well after being reset promptly died - it
never grew any roots - it never broke it's semi-dormancy.
Some of the large rhizomes I dug this weekend are BALD rhizomes, and were
therefore thrown out. BUT - if they were to go to the member's sale at the
iris club and bought and grown by someone who doesn't know what a bald rhizome
looks like, then they would be very disappointed that the large rhizome they
plant sits there and does absolutely nothing until it dies.
A report that an iris dies is not negative, it is just data as Linda says.
There are many many things that contribute to its demise that aren't even
mentioned above.
PERSONAL RANT: One of the things I believe happens at times is that a variety
throws an offspring (increase rather than seedling) that is genetically weak
in some regard and just does not live no matter what you do for it. Or, if it
does live, it produces weak rhizomes year after year after year.

??
Sorry folks, I don't see how reporting a fact, i.e., that a plant has
died, is a negative comment.
It's just data....
