Hi George,

We use Treflan (the main ingredient in Preen) on newly planted beds right 
after planting to keep weed seeds from germinating.  It works quite well for that 
purpose.  It doesn't kill weeds that are already growing.  If you have a 
garden center that sells Treflan, it is usually cheaper than the brand name Preen.
