Just some thiking out loud

Do iris have traits such as general hardiness, that is survives in all sorts of climates. Perhaps there are plants that are generally fussy and some that are generally tolerant of wide range of conditions. For example,  most of the plants that do well here seem to do well in a range ofclimates, not just colder climates.
There has been talk of wet tolerant, rot resistant, drought resistent East Coast, West coast etc, but to me it seems that the same tender/fussy  plants do well in only certain climates but hardier plants seem to do well in a large(r) variety of climates

Any comments?
