I don't know, Chuck. In discussions on this list and some swaps with
Jeff Walters (colder winter, summer dry) it seems like in most cases,
the best in dry summer areas are duds in wet summer areas and vice
versa. Seems to be true in hotter climates as well.
Anybody have comments on the list of survivors posted below? Most of
these have pedigrees that indicated they might live here (i.e.,
relatives that live here).
<it seems that the same tender/fussy plants do well in only certain
climates but hardier plants seem to do well in a large(r) variety of
climates Any comments? Chuck Chapman Zone 5b>
Cindy, it isn't 'excessive' moisture, it's "normal" moisture <g> and
very high humidity during hot weather. Especially when it alternates
with weeks of no rain. Normal rainfall here is more than 50 inches per
year. Often 2 inches in 24 hrs, not unusual to have rain every day for
weeks with high temps in the upper 80s to low 90s. Another factor is
bloom season - early bloomers are often badly damaged by late
winter/early spring sudden hard freezes (night time temps suddenly
dropping to the low 20s or teens after weeks well above freezing),
setting up for disease. Add to that high disease burden here because my
goal is to grow only cultivars that can tolerate such conditions - no
spray, no grooming, no clean cultivation. Neil says soils in wet summer
areas have high levels of fungal diseases that dry summer areas don't
have (I hope I got that right...) <Nothing> increases here like the
increase described recently by Francelle (I think).
Here's the list of new survivors from last year with blooming size
increases.
Biggest surprise here is CLOUD BERRY - seems to be thriving, with
healthy foliage in spite of coming from a summer dry climate. It must
like the gravelly soil & all the rain this summer.
