I went the chickens-as-a-cure-for-grasshoppers route several years ago. What a disaster! It worked for awhile but then the chickens decided they liked worms better than grasshoppers and dug up my iris beds looking for worms. They sent the rhizomes flying in every direction. After their little discovery that worms lived my iris beds and the digging was easy there, "the girls" were only let out of their chicken yard late in the evening to forage for grasshoppers and crickets while I stood guard over my flower beds with broom in hand, ready to swat their little hinders.
