Hi! I live in El Paso which is desert, dry and hot in summer with the
exception of 1 month which is rainy time. Winter is dry and we do get to
freezing here but not many days or very hard freeze.
I have 3 different areas to plant and need some advice on the best.
site 1--on the south side of a rock wall in a planter that is 24" tall and
about 24 inches front to back. Gets sun all day and the rock wall absorbs
the heat during the day and at night radiates it off. Don't know if it
would be too hot for it during the summer days. I've had old iris there and
sometimes they look pretty wilted during the summer.
site 2 -- in my courtyard that has 8ft high brick walls around it. I have a
shade cloth overhead on wire that can be moved to let more sun or less sun
on the flowers. It is on the south side of the house, in a raised bed of
about 12-16" high and about 24" front to back. The shade cloth protects it
from the hot sun all summer but it can be moved to let more sun when needed.
site 3 -- On the North side of the front courtyard wall. In same type of
bed. (This raised bed goes around the inside of the courtyard wall.) It
would be in the corner of the bed facing West and North. Not sure if it
would be too damp for it there. It is in the shade at this time of the year
til about 10:30AM.
Anyone have any ideas? PLEASE??
Also I would imagine that I would need to find flowers that do not need lots
of water to plant in the same bed. I just found out from the person that
gave me the iris that they don't like to be wet.
I did buy 9 iris plants when we were on vacation but of those, I have lost 4
for sure that turned soft and 2 are iffy.
Thanks.
