That could be why we have only had 1 incident of frost heaving in all my years of
gardening here in Lubbock (a dry zone 7).  That year it heaved the concrete
edgers out of the ground but not the iris.  Guess I should just be grateful we 
don't have to deal with it!

I think it depends on if the freeze is enough to stop or signifigantly stop plant
growth before the next series of freezes. It needs to grow the roots as deeply as
possible, although we have had frost heave here that has lifted two year clumps. I
think it mostly revolves around soil moisture levels at the time freezing occurs.
If it will heave a 4" thick sidewalk, an iris is not a challenge :)
