I have planted Siberians as late as Oct. 21, not by choice but because a
friend in Virginia sent me a lot of them. I figured they would never make it
through the winter, but I planted them and put on a good layer of airy mulch.
(I always use the old cornstalks from my garden.) To my amazement, every
single one of the 21 iris survived and grew wonderfully.
