Anner, I didn't notice that ruffling was different. It may be due more
to photo of the richer colored ones being less fully open. Falls are
also more horizontal in the fall photo.
Betty and Griff, you mention seeing this phenom in some of your
seedlings. Betty, do you think this may be more of a problem in the
rebloom lines we are working with? Griff, you also use rebloom some,
but also oldies - any sense of whether or not this is more likely to be
a problem with the oldies/rebloomer gene pools?
How about those of you working in less variable/awful climates? I guess
if the climate in bloom seasons are more similar year to year than they
are here, it wouldn't be as noticeable.
Any of you notice much of this extreme seasonal/year to year color
change in storebought cultivars? From what Donald says (on photos),
plus the ones that both Betty and Griff (and I) have noticed, it seems
to be more noticeable (?) with blue pigments and blue combined with
yellow/pink (i.e., brown, red).
Only reason I'm asking is because I'm concerned that (like haftiness),
if this is a trait associated more with older cultivars than with newer
ones, it's something I will have to start paying closer attention to.
If I'm going to have a perfect seedling some day <g>
<In the photo the blossom also looks more ruffled. Is that the case?
Cordially,
Anner Whitehead>
