Linda, I think there are two things in play here. One is cold weather vs
warm or hot weather. And it shows up more (to me) in the spring vs fall
blooms. Another factor that may be in play with your seedling is the maiden bloom
phenomena. I'm not sure WHY, but many seedlings show colors or patterns in
the maiden bloom that will never show up again.

I offer this one as an example. The above photo was maiden bloom Nov. 2004.
I'd put them in the same email but when I do that AOL puts them in a zip.

Here is 1810-1Re as it bloomed in August 2006. (About the same in 2005
also) If I get a stalk later this fall, I'll have a better comparison as to the
maiden bloom part.

In my opinion, RADIANT BLISS has exquisite color in the fall. I make
excuses just to go look at it! Not as awesome in the spring. Is it because
there's much more competition in the spring and I'm more busy? Possible! But I
think it's because the colors are more intense in the cooler fall weather.

If you don't cross them, you'll won't have to plant them! Bah! Humbug!! Hot
summer!
