Re: REB: reblooming questions

Hi Evan - I shoulda read here first ;-)

From what I've learned from others on this group, there are at least two different genetic packages that can be present in rebloomers (one or the other or both). check the archives for discussion of this, esp posts by Chuck Chapman re: genetics.

But even with the rebloom genetics present, the plant has to be growing well, which relates to moisture and nutrition you mention.

The relationship to temperature and daylength isn't quite as clear. One theory we've talked about here is that the relationship to daylength and temperature may be cultivar specific.

We've also discussed how the relationship of daylength and temperature to rebloom (if the genes are there) might have more to do with how the plant is growing, since daylength and temperature tend to go together (used to go together more than they do now!) and are related to seasonal patterns of rainfall in a lot of locations.

George Sutton has also suggested that rebloom for some cultivars is related to soil pH.

We've been talking about the subject quite a bit this past year & Chuck has us out counting leaf blades as an index of maturity of rhizome/readiness to rebloom.

<I have little in-depth knowledge of RB's, would suspect the following to all
have some level of influence:
  a.. Cooler Evenings
  b.. Moisture
  c.. Length of Day
  d.. Adequate Nutrition
e.. Overall Condition of Plant (not stressed by poor culture)
Thoughts?

I noticed a stalk rising in Summer Olympics in my garden just yesterday. I
kind of hate to see it bloom since my whole garden was newly planted this year
so I won't have a stalk on this plant in the Spring... however, since it's
started, hope it gets to maturity before our first frost! *grinz*
