"Diamond dusting" is very, VERY hard to capture on film because it fools the
camera's "eye". It's really a trick of the light, most prominent in bright sun
-- which is not the best condition for getting accurate color. Every hair of
the beard? I want to not only see that hair, but capture the color variation on
it! My own definition of a sharp picture is one that shows the individual
grains of pollen.
In terms of "photographic tips", my favorite one concerns color accuracy. I
take a picture of the Macbeth color chart on the first frame, then ask the
developer to balance the roll to it. Not only are the pictures more accurate,
but there is a record of any remaining bias and (in the case of prints) the
means to correct it.
