Hmmmm, lots of room for personal judgement here. I use a Olympus IS-3 DLX, 35 to
160 zoom. In the macro mode I can get to within 16" or so of an object and have
pretty good depth of field. At that range a 3 1/2 inch rose fills the veiwfinder
top to bottom. Generally I shoot with Kodak Gold 100. I get pretty good pictures
with it. I you are interested enough send me your snail mail and I'll send you a
couple of Iris pics. I've never tried to get absolutely the biggest picture
because you run the risk of cutting off a edge. If I were to blow some of these
up, I am pretty sure I could see the fine hairs of the beard. (I can see a lot of
them in a normal 3X5.) As to diamond dust. Not sure. Never having seen it (to my
knowledge that is.) I think DD might be as much a lighting problem as anything
else assuming the flower is in focus. If I were going to want to look for the
detail you mention I would definitely opt for some of the denser professional
film and if you are making a hobby or profession out of that sort of picture,
definitely get a camera that is specific for that purpose.

I have a friend who is a professional photographer and have logged a message on
his voice mail to ask some questions. I'll let you know. Most "good" camera shops
will have a rental or trial program so that you can experiment with several
different kinds.

What camera do you use? Does it have a macro mode?
