Arthur in Denmark --
If folks in the USA are topdressing their iris, I hope they are
preparing for winter dormancy, and giviing protection from the cold wet
ice and snow to come. I hope they aren't doing that to fertilize and start
growth that will promote rot in that same ice, cold and wet. Top dressing
CAN act somewhat like a mulch. I for one would not put either nitrogen
or alfalfa on my iris at this time of year. We are into a more - or - less
typical fall, cold nights (maybe 45 degrees -about 10 C) and hopefully
bright sunny days of about 65 - or less than 2 C and both numbers falling
steadily. We will get even more rain to keep things really wet out there,
and I would like really hard-as-a-rock rhizomes to meet the coming snow and
cold.
What's your current weather like? Will you get lots of rain and
snow and cold?
Carolyn Schaffner in Buffalo, NY, eastern end of Lake Erie, which
keeps us warm and wet till the lake freezes over then cold and wet till
the lake warms us again in the spring/summer/fall if ever.
