plantine Iris's

I read the out of  contex message about planting Iris's and am wondering 
 why it is necessary to top dress when the plantes are going dormant? I can 
understand if alfalfa meal is bone meal, which is very slow acting , I 
expect some will think this is a stupid question but remember  live and 
learn.
I
 planted 24 lovely bearded
iris cultivars from Joe Ghio last weekend.  I topdressed with a low
nitrogen granular fertilizer and alfalfa meal this past weekend.
