Re: AIS Awards

Good thinking. Clarence. More time would be great. By five years everyone in
the East could report that the iris is a poor grower, and the western crew
could not vote it into honors. H>H.M. could be H.R. Highly Recommended.

The daylily folks insist that a cv be seen by judges in at least 4 gardens
in their region before it can be voted a Award of Merit. This means that
a hybridizer must get the cv into four gardens in as many regions of the AHS
as possible to work its way into the balloting.

Am I somewhat correct that the irises in the balloting don't have any
regional selection going for them? I could visit Southern California,
or Rich in New Jersey and see a cv and vote for it, even though neither is
in my region and the cv may never ever grow well in Western New York??

As Dennis says, I COULD (if I read Schreiners,Roris,Cooley) see it in the
photo, and vote for it!

AIS asks judges for the number of gardens in and outside the judge's home
as the site of origin (inside, outside of 25 mile radius, etc,) maybe
the judges' activity sheet should ask WHICH gardens are viewed..

maybe we should be allowed to vote for cvs seen only within our local area
(25 miles from home garden) ??????

The question might be whether a judge can realistically recommend a cv
which grows in California, but not in NYState --????????????

I am suggesting that the Awards system should be looked at as an entire
system, from the judges' training on the importance of viewing gardens,
to the actual ballot and names for the awards -- it IS a systemic problem!!
