Unless the horses are starving, they should leave your irises alone...Iris
leaves are not liked by any animals I am aware of...although I have read that
in some parts of central Asia Iris lactea is used as a fodder plant, I think
for the musk ox. Apparently other plants are very scarce where Iris lactea
thrives, and apparently the musk oxen are very hungary. Voles have been
known to eat iris roots, but that is a different matter...they will always
choose a hosta over an iris. Clarence Mahan in VA
