The British Iris Society will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 1997...to
makr the occasion it will hold a convention at Hadlow, in Kent from May 23rd
to May 26th 1997...The Chelsea Flower show will be held just a few days
before, and for anyone going to Hadlow, the BIS will assist in getting
special tickets to Chelsea if requested.
The registration fee is 75 pounds sterling per person, which includes coach
tours as well as free admission to special lectures. The Farewell Banquet is
optional, and is 16 pounds extra per person---this banquet is limited to the
first 150 people signing up for it!!! So registering early is recommended.
The three days of tours have a wide range of options, for example on the
first day one can choose to go to Wisley Gardens and one private iris garden,
to Sissinghurst and Finchcocks House, Garden and Musical Instruments Museum,
or to Chartwell House and Gardens and 3 private iris gardens. The second day
one has a choice of Hever Castle, Leondardslee Gards, and Penshurst Place and
Loose Village. The third day one may go to Rye and Great Dixter House and
Brickwall House, or to 8 smaller gardens, or take a River Thames trip from
Westminster to Greenwich. There also may be a one day tour to Belgium using
the new Channel Tunnel...but this is not certain right now.
For more information and registration form, write Mrs. Thelma Naylor, 4
Amherst Close, Maidsone, Kent, ME16 OJB, England. Thelma is a dear, helpful
lady, and dedicated irisarian! A number of North Americans are already
signing up...Suky and I wouldn't miss it, and Dr. McEwen told me the other
day that he is definitely going!
I am posting this as a service to all you wonderful people on the IRIS-L...if
