Another reason to rototill - slice all those bindweed roots to bits. It
doesn't seem to tolerate the hot sun well. That acid loving thing and it's
relatives (rumex, sorrel,...) on the other hand are incredibly persistent -
all the bits and pieces of roots must sprout. I've seen big chunks of roots
of the non-stoloniferous one sit on top of the ground for a month or more in
the hot sun and gradually re-root when rains come. And they don't seem to
mind Roundup particularly.
If you don't want to use Roundup, a dandelion digger works pretty well, even
in my rocky ground. I have a long handled one that I can sort of use
standing up. At least I can reach across the row with it. Its the long
skinny metal thing with a forked, flattened, sharpened end. Stick the fork
in the dandelion below the leaves, shove, twist and out she comes or the top
is sliced off anyway, and below the terminal meristem, they don't seem to
resprout. I am not as sure about sorrel, but it works equally well to get
rid of what's there at the time.
And then there is clover - argghh!!
