Dear all,
I don't know if briquettes would work the same way as activated
charcoal, I suspect they wouldn't. I did a bit of work here comparing
activated carbon (charcoal) with normal (unactivated) and they adsorb things
the same way.
A simple way to test whether the briquettes have any activity and therefore
will be of benefit is to add some crushed briquette to a glass of water with
a little food colouring added. Activated charcoal will remove almost all the
colour in a few minutes. If you find the briquette dust doesn't then it
probably wont be of benefit in the pool (unless it somehow becomes activated).
Activated charcoal actually has a different molecular stucture to normal
charcoal, the carbon atoms are arranged with gaps between them where stray
molecules can get stuck. The activated charcoal may possiblely adsorb some
wanted nutrients as well as toxins!
I hope this is helpful,
bye for now
