The subject here is charcoal!!
I have a half whiskey barrel that I use for a water garden -- growing
wonderful water hycinths that bloom like mad, and a water lily that is ditto,
and a fish, although I killed three of them already this year.
When I went to the shop to get the fish, I talked with the guy about the
barrel and keeping the water clean, and all, and he said that if the barrel
has been burned onthe inside (not considering the, that humans DRINK from
a barrel that has been burned on the inside!!) (humans drink the STUFF from...)
the burning of the wood produces the charcoal that would keep the barrel
clean!! Unfortunately, I had lined the barrel with black plastic (yes it does
look ok) but if it held whiskey, it should hold water, I thought, much too
late -- and I intend to take the plastic off and allow the charcoal to do
its thing.
Therefore, I wonder if a wooden whiskey half barrel would work for LA's??
If it leaks, so much the better as it won't get waterloged.
Carolyn Schaffner in wet wet Buffalo, NY where the LAs, the Sib's, the JI's
are doing GREAT!! under all this rain, but there's rot elsewhere!!
PS, the rain has, it seems, compressed the soil around the tubors of
newly planted bearded so that the tubors are uncovered -- including the
test tubers of arils. I think also that the new root systems are tough,
wiry anchor roots that are pushing the tubers up out of the soil..
