Re: Labels

This is the first year I have needed labels. Before I saw it on the
List, I read about using old vinyl or metal blind strips in a gardening
book I have from Rodale, "Great Garden Shortcuts." Since I needed to
shorten ours, I cut them into 5 and 5 1/2 inch strips. I'm using the 5
inch ones currently because they're from the two ends of the blind and
look nicer with their rounded edges. I write on them with a Sharpie
marker, black. I tried using red but it faded almost instantly. I've
had them in the ground with my tomatoes and peppers all summer and the
black ink didn't even try to fade. The book suggests pushing them down
into the ground with only about 1/4 inch showing, and put them in the
same place, corner, etc. with relation to the plant so you can find it
in the spring. Some of the people have had the same labels 5 years and
they didn't crack or disintegrate. We shall see! I am now using them
for the iris, since they are all single rhizomes in 4 gallon pots. So
far so good!
