Re: Lindane

I use it before bloom cause I also spray my
dogwoods, azaleas and ornamentals. Also it is a topical spray - not
overkill early in the season. I think it is safer than Cygon...other
people thing so too....and when purchased in bulk - lots cheaper.

Whew!! Do you wear a mask or use any protection, Dennis? It seems that these
are/could be big, high shrubs -- what sort of machinery do you use for
spraying??

What do you think of integrated pest management procedures? I mean, Sally
Cunningham, mentioned in Kathyguest's message, is an organic grower and
along with some other folks, advocate IMP as a way to reduce the amount
of chemicals AS WELL AS protect the humans/environment. (THAT's IPM back there)
In IPM, a gardener would use chemicals only on specific plants/pests AFTER
it is determined the amount of tolerance the gardener has for the bug
in question. how much damage can you stand, or can the garden stand?
and how many beneficial bugs have you tried already, before deciding to
use chemicals.

Additionally, if there's an enormous problem with bugs and with the plants,
perhaps the choice of plants should be re examined, as well as the location
in the garden AS WELL AS soil conditions. ETC>

I imagine you do consider all of the factors suggested by IPM, and then
when you do spray, you protect yourself. The original question is about
how do you protect yourself -- masks, gloves, etc.

THIS IS MORE FUN THAN GETTING DOWN ON YOUR KNEES TO LOOK AT FOLIAGE !!
